Lucky Star OVA

If you’re a fan of Lucky Star, then you’ll probably love the release of the OVA. If you’re not a fan and haven’t watched it, you’ll probably wonder what’s going on in the OVA, however. Anyways, I am a fan, and I loved it.

The OVA is basically a set of six side stories for Lucky Star and does a pretty good job of showing the characters and their interactions that we all love. Or at least we all should love: if you’re not a fan, then begone! All kidding aside, there’s no deep story or world-shattering meaning: it’s all pure fun.

Cherry and Hiyori

The first story is about Minami’s dog, Cherry. Pretty much a slice of life story, except that it’s from a dog’s point of view. And Tamura still has problems with the dog.

Online game

The second story has Konata, Kagami, Tsukasa, and Miss Kuroi playing the same multiplayer online game. It’s hilarious how their real world personalities are reflected in the virtual world. Not to mention how pitiful Miss Kuroi turns out to be as she has a lot more time to level up her character.

Hatsune Kagami and Witch Konata

The third story goes into the weird subconsciousness of the usually conventional Kagami. The cosplay and potential yuri were unexpected. And Kagami might feel embarrassed about what she said in her sleep for a long time.

Rise of Tsukasa

The fourth story is about Tsukasa trying to win against her sister, Kagami, in volleyball. It’s all about sportsmanship. We also see how good Konata is at sports when she puts her mind to it, and how she usually does not care to put much effort into athletics.

Lost

In the fifth story, Miyuki tells her mother about her semi-disastrous camping trip that was still fun. One lesson to take from this is not to follow the whim’s of Konata too easily; she’ll do things or make choices simply because it might be interesting, not out of any careful considerations, unless it’s about obtaining some rare anime collectible. And bring some more food when on a camping trip.

The sixth and last story is a surreal one that seems to be a parody of existing genres and shows.

And it wouldn’t be an animated Lucky Star episode if it doesn’t end with Lucky Channel by Akira and Minoru. This one is special in that it’s live action.

Overall, the OVA was a very nice bone to toss to us Lucky Star fans.
