As I already know the story for the original game, I had decided not to blog about the new anime Phantom ~Requiem for the Phantom~: blogging about it wouldn’t be as much fun without the theories and speculations. But I’m still watching it, and I have some impressions after watching the first episode.
First, the good, of which there is not enough with only one episode so far:
- Indications are that it will cover much of the story of the original game. It remains to be seen how it’s presented: the first episode makes it look like it will cover multiple periods of time concurrently, but the show may go back to a chronological order. It’s also not clear how much mashing of alternate plots will occur, if any.
But enough was shown for some bad impressions:
- Large emphasis on style over substance in assassination, understandable when killing is not the goal but not so much when there is actual killing. I remember the assassins from the game being much more no-nonsense (not that they didn’t have their flashy moments).
- Ein, the female assassin, looks like just an expressionless girl, when in the game she looked somewhat exotic, and more importantly, ice cold.
I’m still going to watch it, although having been biased by the game, I can neither recommend for nor against the new anime. I can’t decide whether to recommend it based on the potential for the story shown by the original game, or whether to recommend against it because I’m comparing the anime against too high a standard.
